  • Heritage

    Gidan Makama Museum

    Kofar Kudu, Kano Ancient City

A 15th-century palace complex that now houses the Gidan Makama Museum, with galleries on the history, crafts and royal culture of Kano.

Allow at least an hour. Dress modestly and ask before photographing interiors.

  • Heritage

    Emir's Palace

    Kano Ancient City, Kano

The Gidan Rumfa, seat of the Emir of Kano, is one of the largest palaces in West Africa and a defining landmark of the ancient city.

The public face of the palace is best seen from the square. Guided visits may be limited on ceremonial days.

  • Heritage

    Kano City Walls

    Ancient City, Kano

The historic mud walls and gates of Kano once enclosed the trading city. Surviving stretches still give a sense of the old defensive circuit.

Wear closed shoes. Some sections are uneven. A local guide helps identify the remaining gates.

  • Market

    Kurmi Market

    Kurmi, Kano Ancient City

Kurmi is among the oldest markets in Africa, a dense grid of stalls for textiles, leather, spices and crafts in the heart of the old city.

Keep valuables close. Agree prices politely. Late morning is lively without the peak heat.

  • Craft

    Kofar Mata Dye Pits

    Kofar Mata, Kano

The centuries-old indigo dye pits at Kofar Mata remain in use. Craftsmen dip cloth in deep pits of dye in a tradition unique to Kano.

The pits are an active workshop. Watch your step and ask before photographing people at work.

  • Heritage

    Great Mosque of Kano

    Kano Ancient City

The central mosque beside the palace is a place of worship and a civic landmark, especially at Friday prayers.

Non-worshippers should remain outside during prayer. Dress modestly and follow local guidance.
